7 Indoor Exercise Ideas for Pugs

Pugs are excellent indoor companions, but “indoors” does not have to mean “inactive.” On hot, wet, smoky, or otherwise unpleasant days, you can still give a pug useful movement and mental work without turning the living room into an agility arena.

1. Hide-and-seek

Have someone hold your pug while you hide somewhere easy, then call them. Celebrate when they find you. As they understand the game, make the hiding spots a little harder.

2. Short tug sessions

A sturdy tug toy can turn a few minutes into interactive exercise. Keep the game controlled, let your pug win sometimes, and stop if the play becomes frantic or uncomfortable.

3. Low-impact obstacle course

Use cushions, cones, boxes, or folded blankets to create a route around the room. Think weaving, stepping over very low objects, circling furniture, and going to a mat—not high jumps.

4. Trick training

Training adds movement and brain work at the same time. Try touch, spin, place, paw, wait, or “go to bed.” Keep sessions short and rewarding.

5. Food-dispensing toys

Use part of your pug’s measured meal in a slow feeder or food-dispensing toy. This can turn dinner into an activity without adding extra calories.

6. Scent games

Hide a few pieces of kibble in easy places and encourage your pug to search. Start simple. Sniffing and searching can be surprisingly satisfying.

7. Toy rotation

Put half the toys away for a week and then swap them. Familiar toys often become interesting again after a short absence.

Keep it pug-appropriate

Pugs are brachycephalic dogs, so indoor exercise should still respect breathing tolerance, age, weight, and overall health. Stop if your pug seems distressed, unusually winded, painful, or unable to recover normally.
